WHY WE WALK
Each year we honor another victim and their family. This year, the five year anniversary of the death of Nikki Kellenyi, we honor her life in our "Five Year Anniversary Walk With PADD" to end distracted driving. Next years walk will honor one of the hundred thousand victims killed by DUI of cell phones.
This year, Nikki's death represents thousands of other families affected by distracted driving whose lives are changed forever. Nikki was a young 18 year old high school senior with a bright future, her whole life ahead of her. Destined to be the 2012 prom queen, a driver on a cell phone changed the outcome. Nikki would never make her senior prom. Instead, her mission to save others from a preventable death has become a mission from heaven, saving thousands since she was. But Nikki should be making new memories everyday instead of bringing us tears. Our goal is to walk, so you don’t have to live our nightmare. If you have ever sent a text, read and email, sent a tweet, read a map or know some type of distraction almost caused a crash, show your support so a tragedy like this doesn’t affect you. Our world, like thousands of other families affected by distracted driving was changed forever.
Long after a crash, survivors still feel the impact. PADD Victim Services provides emotional support and assistance with medical and legal struggles that follow a distracted driving crash.
If you or a loved one has been affected by a distracted or inattentive driving crash, PADD is here to help. We have victim advocates nationwide who can help bereaved families and injured victims/survivors by:
- Providing emotional support
- Providing advocacy in the criminal and civil justice systems
- Accompanying victims/survivors to court
- Assisting in preparing a victim impact statement
- Referring victims/survivors to appropriate resources for additional help
- Offering support groups in many areas
- Connecting victims/survivors who share similar experiences
- Providing supportive materials on victimization topics
